Titusville, Florida

Titusville, Florida

Overview

Ironically, the Space City can be found within the planet within the borders of Florida. The county seat of Brevard County has been nicknamed as such because the Canaveral National Seashore and the Kennedy Space Center can be found nearby. Only a few people experience waking up to a thunderous and ground shaking lift-off of a massive rocket, or watch a previously endangered Osprey lift itself into a graceful flight. While these may not be true to everyone, residents of Titusville, Florida, consider it the usual fare.  Tourists can also partake in over 60 local adventures that make Titusville a favorite worldly destination.

Fast Facts

  • The city was founded in 1867, when Col. Henry Theodore first stepped on the shores of the Indian River. He had the idea of creating a town governed by him and his wife. The couple built the first hotel in the area, then known as The Titus House, which overlooked the Indian River.
  • The city almost became known as Riceville, had Col. Titus lost a game of dominoes to Capt. Clark Rice.
  • Titusville was the birthplace of the Indian River Citrus’ commercial shipments. In the 1890’s, the city saw its first railroad connection, fishing industry, two newspaper companies, and the establishment of the pioneer bank.
  • After the commencement of man’s space walks and the construction of the Kennedy Space Center, Titusville experienced a boom in several industries in the sixties.

Tourist Attractions

The Kennedy Space Center is the Cape Canaveral area’s most famous attractions. It is due to this establishment at NASA Parkway that Titusville was called the Space Coast. Apart from the museum, guests will find the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse just nearby. Another interesting attraction is the nearby launch pad of unmanned satellites and rockets, the Patrick Air Force base. The sprawling area of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge features palm and oak hammocks, pine forests and flatwoods, scrub oaks, and coastal dunes. Wildlife includes bald eagles, sea turtles, Florida scrub jays, and manatees. Apart from the 16 endangered species of animals, the refuge also has more than 330 species of birds and 1,000 species of plants. Walking tours and self-guided car excursions are available.
